Tom: What Could Be The Reason To The Decrease in Sales?

Posted by mrlaundry in February 8th 2010

Tom Said,
February 8th, 2010 @11:08 am

Hi, bago ako dito, I’ve put up my laundry November last year, last December I’m averaging 100kilos a day, this mid January there was a sudden decrease of sales, luckily kung maka 30 kilos a day kami. Most of my clients are residing sa condo so mostly for pick up sila. Tinatanong ko naman staff ko wala naman daw naging problema or hindi lang nila sinasabi sa akin, is it appropriate na tawagan ko former clients ko kung ano ang naging problem? Thanks & more power.

Hi Tom,

Your opening last November was a good timing because it nears December which is a peak season for laundry businesses. Everyone’s got lots of money meaning they can afford to have their clothes brought to laundry. Congratulations! Having 100kilos a day is a difficult feat to follow. However for your sales to drastically fall, something really wrong. Your staff may not be telling but I’m sure may mali sa naging system either ng staff or sa operation mismo. My advice is check on your inventories. Detergent usage, plastics, receivables, water consumption..and lastly, you are right, call your former customers.Ask them what went wrong, bakit hindi na sila nagpapalaba?  That would able you to discover what could be the problem..And if ever there was mistake done by your staff, let your staff know that you learned about it and pag sabihan dapat sila, ayusin ang trabaho nila or else, marami pang nag hahanap ng trabaho para palitan sila..

Good luck!

Have a nice day!

Tlcp7sp: Congratulations On Your Opening!

Good day!

We are currently on our 4th day of operation. So far, hindi pa namin namee2t target namin per day.. hehe.. pero the good thing is nadadagdagan yun customers per day. :D

1st day namin, which is also the blessing, wala kami customer. hehe.. 2nd day namin buti naman ay may nagpalaba kahit isa. 4th day namin, today is mas marami na sila.

Share ko lang din regarding sa latest namin nakuha na customer. Magclo2sing na sana kami, then dumating si customer may dalang 4 1/2 kilos of laundry. Clothes plus a bedsheet. Si customer pinatong ng deretso sa timbangan un items, buti na lang napansin kaagad namin na may bedsheet pala. May promo kami ng 4+1. Yun “clothes” nya is 4 kilo ang inabot, yun bedsheet is 1/2 kilo. But the thing here is… yun “Clothes” na yun is (sorry for the term) macoconsider natin na basahan. as in madumi talaga na hindi mo rin kakayanin matanggal yun dumi kahit kusutin. Nun first drain ng water, sobrang dumi nun lumabas na tubig. Then during the rinse period, yun lumabas na tubig is parang un first drain lang sa other regular clothes wash.

Another thing here is, yun plastic nya is from the existing “established” laundry shop. We might think na baka recycled lang yun, pero hindi. Kasi yun plastic is mukhang hindi pa nagagamit. So we are thinking na galing talaga sa existing “established” laundry shop. Siguro nananadya lang or sinusubukan kami.

So ganito ang ginawa namin sa mga “clothes”. We washed them using the regular process ng washing. Pero hindi sya kinaya, so binabad namin sya sa bleach, titignan pa namin tomorrow kung may improvement.

Should we charge them premium regarding this? or should it be charged to experience? Ganito ba talaga pag first timer ka? hehehe
Anu tingin nyo dito?

**any comment will be welcomed**

tlc7sp,

First off, congratulations on your opening. You have stepped up and proceeded on your gut feel.
Let me tell you, the first step is the most difficult thing to do in starting a business.

As for your question: How are you going to charge a customer whose clothes are super dumi or totally soiled: I’d suggest you charge them regular, regardless whether they’re a spy, a competitor or maybe just plain customer… It’s a good thing that you’ve exerted effort in cleaning the laundry items because this would reflect an impression. This would spread through word of mouth. Kumbaga, they would talk about how clean their clothes have become.

Next would be, when they claim their items, inform them that you have cleaned their uber soiled clothes and were supposed to charge them extra for that but since you’re just newly opened you have instead charged them regular, and the extra effort is free of charge. Tell them this is a promo that would run “until further notice”

Finally, reason as to why you wont charge them: that is sort of an invitation because your shop is “newly opened” and exerting an extra effort for free would be a good topic for your shop to be talked about, don’t you agree? :)

There, I hope I was able to contribute something on your new business..

Again, congratulations!

Question And Answer About Laundry Business

Posted by mrlaundry in January 27th 2010

This are queries I got through comment. I will reply based on my experience, (briefly). This will give an idea, but research is still necessary. My replies would be in the italics.

I am currently studying masters in management in one of the universities here in Cebu. As part of the course requirement, we are required to submit a feasibility study, and i have chosen the laundry business for my study.Through the internet, I came across your postings about tips in putting up a laundry business. In this regard, i hope you won’t mind if i ask you the following questions about your business:

1. How much was your capitalization in starting up the business? Depends on the scale of your business, it could range from 100k to 1M.
2. How many years have you been in the business? Im already turning 8 years in the business.
3. How many machines did you have at the start and what were these machines? (Pls specify details; e.g. washing machine wiht 10-11 kg capacity) I started the business with only a pair of washer and dryer, 10kg capacity.
4. How much is you rent per month if you are renting? I’m renting the whole place at 20k but rental is shared by my other businesses.
6. What is the approximate area does a small, start-up laundry shop usually occupy? I have an area of 24 sq.m. when I started.
7. How much is the estimated sales per day? What is its sales growth for the past years? Sales varies from 1500k-4000k per day.In terms of sales growth, if you stick in one area, there’s really none, unless you expand, meaning put  up branches. I already have 3 branches at present, all stand alone, meaning not a pick up station.
8. How much is the estimated water and electricity expense per month? Consumption depends on the business coming in. The more customer, the bigger the expense.
9. How profitable is the business? (Its estimated percentage to sales) Depends, to say the ball park figure of direct cost: It’s 14%.
10. What are your services and their corresponding prices? I set a standard of 28-30/per kilo of wash dry fold. Wash dry press at 70/kilo.
11. What is the time frame for every laundry job? 24 hours
12. How many employees do you have? Are they full time? 2 All around. Full time
13. How long did you get your return on investment? Ranges from 3 to 6 months
14. What is the condition of your business now? How does it deal with competition? Business is doing good. I compete with quality service. I never bring down my price, it’s not good for the business.
15. How do you dispose of your water waste? Goes straight to the city sewage system.

16. What are your SOPs to avoid wastage of detergents and damage to the fabrics? I keep an inventory. I also use a very efficient type of detergent, very convenient on usage and almost 0 wastage.

17. What are your firm’s advantages over your competitors? How do you attract and keep customers? Our advantage is we are already 9 years in the business and we were able to develop a system that makes our business run smoothly. We offer quality service, which is value for money. We keep our customers by maintaining good relationship, we keep our promises and deliver with pride.

Your positive response to this matter will be very beneficial to my study and will be highly appreciated. You may email me your response at my email ad above.

Thank you very much.

Camille: Re Dry Cleaning Chemical

Posted by mrlaundry in January 9th 2010

camille Said,

am..good day!! can i ask something? we are presently conducting a feasibility study about laundry shops as part of our curriculum in our school. i just would like to know what dry cleaning chemicals are usually being used by laundry shops, how much does it costs ( the chemical) per gallon or barrel and where can we buy the chemical? please i really need to have a price per quantity and the name of the seller..thank you!!!

Hi Camille,

As far as my shop is concerned, we do not use those harmful dry cleaning chemicals. We use the “wet method” in our shop which is very safe and environment friendly too. Now regarding that dry cleaning chemical, I think there’s one available in grocery stores which is sold per gallon at Php500. You can check it out.

Good luck!

Have a great weekend!
